It’s always good to meet special people. No matter which page of the book we’re involved in. Sometime we just have to keep on reading and a new impressive character comes out of the blue. This time it was Francesca Adamo, a very young photographer from Forlì I met on a very indie birthday party. The whole photo session was an excuse to gather some songs and compose new material to gather everything in a new EP, called “A Protest”. Find out more on lyrics and tracks…
1. A Protest
This song was originally intended as a love song for two guitars. How two instruments would have expressed such feeling? I wondered the song should have been played but voice and drums only while the two guitars should have sang. When “A Protest EP” project came into my mind I thought that giving up the “Love Song For Guitars” to add some lyrics could have turned out good. That’s why I spent my Saturday autumn evening shouting on my car while driving across a country highway. After the melody came out I passed a whole Saturday night working on the lyrics. And that’s what you get! Track was mixed by Paolo Pugliese, a friend from the band “Les Fauves”. The song closes with Jon Hardy from the indie pop band The Pristines.
2. Ape
I wrote this song as a quick one after realizing that playing “BCK” live would have been too art for me, after a band practicing sesison. That’s before I decided to trash the whole “TenneT” session goin’ for saving the best songs for the next project I’m workin’ on. So the first “APE” version was really a quick one with just drums, electric distored guitars and fuckload of vocals. I really like the reverbs and the harmony in it. As for the song – I don’t know how I came out with that crazy stuff – my attention was caught by a live performance by Lady GaGa showing off her talent on a super furry piano. So I started to wonder how would have been tough having a relationship with an artist selling your privacy by the pound and GaGa singing in front of zillion of people about her new lover replacing her former official mate, afraid of standing an affair with a gurl with such personality. You may find some random references to Donkey Kong and Taran as well.
3. Penelope
After the local success of “Holly Turns To Grey” - a Christamas song I wrote for A Nice Person - I really believed we could have found the time to record “A Reallyt Nice EP”. Quite a year passed after I wrote the first song for that project. It was an acoustic melancholic ballad filled with regret and ’80s nostalgia called “Penelope and The Mac5″. (I guess the first or possibly second song able to impressed Gary Sansom from Duffelcot Records). Days passed becoming ages and I took the chance to finish that marvellous song adding some synth strings and a piano in the second part. Do say I’m really proud of that girl.
4. Big Jazz Theory
This song was intentionally written to be a big hit for a Swedish Label. Partially inspired by the CBS TV Serie “Big Bang Theory”, the song was also an attempt to try and write a song à-la-AlloDarling (Liz keeps on baking us such marvellous anthems for her loved idols, so why shouldn’t deserve a song on her own). I’m really proud of it. Some passages are really close to some specific Trattoria Records productions like Citrus, and it was nice to mix sinth, vocal and real trumpets for the horns parts. Also think it’s the only song I wrote where I play all the possible instrument I’m able to play beside the flute. A Big Jazz indeed!
5. Little Soul Rock
When the Fukushima Incident happened after the great tsunami that shocked Japan (and the World) I felt the urge to do something. I’ve always been in love with that country, and I felt somehow unarmed and defeated as a human being. I reacted by turning off any source of news, lowering the light in my room and starting to write a song on my bed, trying to come out with something my beloved Pizzicato 5 could have done wondering how I would have felt if I should have been hit but such an inevitable and terrible disaster. America, Russia, Lord knows where. Japan wasn’t the first country running on this kind of radioactive hazards, but possibly was the the only one reacting in such a brave and honourable way. Talking about the music in the end I ended to sound a bit like Paul Simon in his solo years. And I do say that I don’t mind that at all! Possibly the most refined song I recorded.
6. A Forest
Me trying to look like Mr. Zimmerman looking for my big guitar solo time. I just tried to get a picture of what it’s happening in the World Year 2011. It came a bit out of focus I suppose.
7. Goodnight Sunshine
A song dedicated to a person I love on the other side of the World. It’s funny having to deal with a person you care so much for and you get to talk with most of the moment of your time sharing a different time location. Sometime I feel like we’re a meta post-modern independent version of the classic movie Lady Hawk, meeting halfway our days. Telling the truth we just swap nights and days, winter and summer, and each time our two half of the World collides we share our impression of the days sharing news and – above all -songs. This girl and me have a very common taste, but it’s surprising how inspiring and refreshing we could be one another, always coming up with something impressive to care fore. Where this kind of relationship will lead us to? How long will it last? Maybe it’s better consider what Audrey Hepburn would have said or talk about one of our favourite bands uncertain future. It’s a sonic youth.
*** The Lyrics ***
1. A Protest
Surrender to the stars
An dream of broken hearts
The silhouetted pines now coming to my sight
The solitary path got pale by the moonlight
I’m diving in the lake
To keep my soul alive.
Valleys and fields
On my feets, standing still
Blades of grass for my tears
Join my sad melody
Calling friends, enemies,
Walk on by in my dreams
Hold my hand
sStay with me
Waiting quiet by the trees
Watch me now.
I watch her shadow grow
Enlived by the fire
Her tear the darkest fall
Projected on the strand
She’s pretty and she knows
So cheerful and alive
The Moonlight stole a smile
for every tear I dried.
The torrent voice rings strong
Sbove a star-bright well
‘Come take this woodland tale
And sing it by the lake
May all the strenght and grace
Enlight her pretty face
Just like a glorious dream
On beds of velvet drapes
Mere of beauty like the grace which lies upon the mountain place
When forest of romance will dance the night away.
Get down and stay.
2. Ape
The bobbed green wig did suite her firnged dress
She immediately pur fingers on her hair
Performing to promote her brand new flame
She sat down calm and sang about her
APE
Banana Banana
(The Angels plays with Romeo tonight)
(A tatoo states I’ll love her till I die)
(My winged cross is older than you think)
(so please come down and carry on with me)
Why must be a pain when silence breaks
She told me she was dumped yesterday
He wasn’t really sure to settle down
A dignified silence left the town
Her heartache fed so many Twitter fans
The Mirror said she didn’t mean to offend
You really need support from a good friend
forget about your boyfriend I’m your
APE
And watch her, she didn’t get donkey konged
while asking the reporter: “How high can you get?”
She worn hairs in coca cola rollers
She’s looking so savage now
With not a place to stay
She must be my Jean and I bet that I’m your…
3. Penelope
Take a seat
Stay with me
Grab your favourite can of beer
Say the words
“I recall!”
Trip down our memory road
Though I can’t disagree – after all – a bit of it all – did chuck in our world
And I would rather not kick – all that dust - but I really wanna know
Penelope, would she ever beat The Mach 5
Penelope, did she ever had a chance
Penelope, would she ever beat The Mach 5
Penelope, are you ever gonna win
A crock of crap, no it wouldn’t change a fact
Penelope, always left me unimpressed
Perfect gloves, bright pink dress
Go-go boots and tight to impress
Glamour gal
Ace of race
Yet a damsel in distress
But you can’t figure out clever ways she will get out
Her safety has never been in doubt.
And she’s crying “Hayulp”
Baby look at her
And she’s crying “Hayulp”
Won’t somebody even care
4. Big Jazz Theory
It’s really not like I don’t care for cats
I have some interests infacts… on Shrodinger’s!
Suddenly your dolphins aren’t sweet… anymore
But God know how I’d get raped for a kiss
Your monkey sleeps inside me
On radioactive boxes
And bites me bad and dead
On random times
Untill the box is open
I’m both alive and broken
Ok, the cat’s alive let’s go!
In a big mess
Such a sweetness
In this big jazz theory
It’s a big mess
A three person chess
In a big jazz theory
Rat pack music it’s ok to escape
But we’re a 6-piece line-up, we’re stuck in clubs
Dinner dances from the radio
1940 in my dark black hole
Come play at my wedding
I’d be so enthusiastic
And don’t forget to break my heart tonight
A wee-mail to say thank yee
For blessing my reception
I think I’m still alive… let’s go!
So live long and prosper
I think we’d better play outside
So live long and prosper
I think my life’s about to start
So live long and prosper
I think we’d better go outside
so live long and prosper
It’s time for good looks and make up
5. Little Soul Rock
Little soul
Hangin’ on the town
Little soul
Look at what we’ve found
So many things we’ve lost are gone
And now I need to be alone
With the one I love
The one who’s singing
Little soul words
Need to listen close
To your heart beats
Fast and loud
Little Soul Rock
Little Soul
We cracked the core
Little Soul
Reach the very source
Our safety is planted in the trash
Is getting daily deemed at last
Let the Motown Stars
Show up in droves
With lil’ soul claps
And then collapse
To their best sound
Anything loud
6. A Forest
Riot Gears to shut the Anti-Wall Street protest scene
See the brand new morning shining clear
Tuesday morning left them with some rounds of bags and beans
Gained by replacing gas with tears
And the television service showed the arrested volunteer
Didn’t look a quiet engineer
All around the Country fighting Democratic greed
Breaking basic laws and smoking weed
With the rats, the acts and violence, the fire and its seeds
The Forest gonna rise and burn its breed
Occupied London part-time protest part-time joke
Students soon to become unemployed
We don’t need no answers from the cooperative corps
Laying down at night among the corns
Verified rumours stated clear in first place
Parents and their children didn’t care
Get out of your tents and get your head around the fact
This won’t stop that waste in any case
So the rats, the craps and violence, the fire and the pain
The Forest gonna rise and burn the day
Nothing I have thought was made to fit these crazy days
I was pretty stroked by your 3rd grade
All around the world they’ll get to catch that pretty wave
Bringing brand new changes into place
Water can be rough and really bad at the same time
I hope you’ll pull some new tricks to survive
Pristine islands, luxury resorts and the good life
Wonderwalls that soon will fall apart
Let the rats, the rain and violence, the shit along the way
Let the Forest rise and bury all the pain
7. Goodnight Sunshine
As I wake up
She gives another yawn
While her make up
It’s almost clearly gone
I was dreaming
To spend my life with you
Were you reading
That sonic youth review
27 years of love and dates
Will the song remane the same the next decade
Guess it’s gettin really late
Goodnight Sunshine
I really have to go
Have some fine wine
I have to catch the flow
Here’s my last line
Goodnight Sunshine
When she comes back
Our talks are made of songs
Trading love tracks
We played all day long
I was waiting
To catch your sleepy eyes
In the morning
I’m tired in disguise
“I should never feel alone” like Audrey said
While you’re mixing jam and bread
And it’s time to go to bed
There is something left unsaid
While you’re typing from yoru Mac
“Goodnight Sunshine”
